SUMMARY:From the Ground Up: Building a New Foundation for Information Literacy at Weber State
DESCRIPTION:There have been many changes to higher education in Utah recently\, and many directly impact our libraries. At Weber State\, it has been particularly consequential for our information literacy (IL) education program: our long-standing IL General Education requirement is ending\, and a new program to sustainably deliver high-quality IL education is needed. To that end\, a team of librarians spent Summer 2025 working with the English department to build a pilot program\, strategically mapping the curriculum and using backward design to embed IL skills and concepts into the English 2010 curriculum. During Fall 2025\, the pilot team embedded in six classes\, providing course content (including mini-lecture videos\, learning activities\, discussions\, and practice assignments) and making three structured classroom visits. In Spring 2026\, the pilot expanded to ten librarians embedded in 31 in-person and online classes. Assessment for both semesters will be conducted at the end of the spring semester\, including data from embedded classes as well as ENGL 2010 classes with no embedded librarian or library content to allow for comparison. We will also collect feedback from students\, librarians\, and faculty involved in the pilot. This session will describe the curriculum mapping/design process\, share lessons\, course materials\, and assessment mechanisms\, review assessment results\, and share success and lessons learned. Part of our time will be dedicated to a workshop where participants will have an opportunity to plan their own embedded programs\, including curriculum mapping\, IL learning activities\, and assessment. Participants are invited to bring a syllabus or course outline from a class where an embedded librarian might benefit the students to use for the workshop. We will wrap up with an open discussion where participants can ask questions and share experiences with embedded programs\, collaborations\, partnerships\, outreach\, faculty and administration\, roadblocks\, and successes.

SUMMARY:Slow Practices for Librarians
DESCRIPTION:The Slow Movement began in the 1980s as an objection to fast food restaurants in Rome\, but it has since been applied to fashion\, art\, education\, and other areas of life. Where modern society pressures us to speed up and become more efficient\, the Slow Movement encourages mindfulness\, environmental sustainability\, intentional practices\, deep attention\, joy—even a different relationship with time. In this workshop\, we will explore what “Slow” can mean for librarians in a range of professional roles. We will also practice some slow activities\, including keeping a commonplace book for inspiration\, cultivating sensory attention\, and framing librarianship in cyclical time rather than linear time. The atmosphere of the workshop will be one of care\, creativity\, and gentleness as we develop meaningful rituals for our work.

SUMMARY:After Rejection: Giving “Failed” Applicants a Chance to Thrive
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all had a job application rejected. But what if “no” wasn’t the end? This session will describe how one university library department\, after a completed search for a faculty librarian\, reached out to some of the so-called “failed” applicants to offer adjunct positions\, training workshops\, cohort support\, and mentorship. Weber State’s Stewart Library gained four much-needed new adjuncts\, and they gained skills and experience to put on their resume -- and something equally valuable\, if not more so: connection and support among colleagues at a time when many of us feel vulnerable and alone. The icing on the cake is that one of those adjuncts now has a position in the same library where it all started! During this session\, we will facilitate a discussion on the culture of job searching and hiring\, and explore avenues for supporting applicants after the “no.” We will brainstorm potential workplace needs and projects that such applicants could work on as adjuncts or interns\, explore ways to facilitate a resume-building program in your library\, how to reach out to a potential cohort and approach management with proposals\, and how to make it work when they don’t have lots of time and you don’t have lots of funds. Participants will help the session facilitators create an open repository of shared resources to help a new generation of librarians gain experience\, develop skills\, and move from the applicant pool to onboarding. By the end of the session\, we’ll construct a shared understanding of how “failure” can be transformed into opportunity. Together\, we can normalize creating resume-building opportunities for good candidates who are simply in the early-career phase\, a little underqualified\, or need a little bit more experience. Let’s turn “no” into “not yet.”

SUMMARY:Archives 101: Intro to Archives
DESCRIPTION:This workshop session is sponsored by the Archives\, Manuscripts\, and Special Collections (AMSC) Roundtable. We will feature several archive workers from across the state\, each giving a short presentation on their archival career\, followed by a brief Q&A. This session is designed to provide newcomers with a broad overview of the archival profession. We hope to provide a platform for a diverse array of archive professionals to share their experiences\, connect with colleagues\, and highlight the important work being done in both large and small institutions. Topics we will cover include: How did you enter the archival profession? What does a typical day in your job look like? What are the key differences between small and large archives? How does your role interact with others in your institution? What kinds of projects are you involved in? What does your project management process look like? What are your local archival practices? And more.

SUMMARY:ULA President's Address & Lisa Varga Keynote
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Varga Keynote: "Beyond the Honeymoon Phase: Reflections on 13 months at the ALA Washington Office"\n\nWhen Lisa Varga assumed the role of Chief Advocacy Officer at the American Library Association\, she changed zip codes and stepped into the epicenter of a shifting national discourse. Moving to Washington\, D.C.\, during a period of historic political and social volatility\, Lisa faced the dual challenge of ALA’s transformation alongside a competitive advocacy landscape. Thirteen months later\, the "honeymoon phase" has ended. In this candid session\, Lisa will move beyond the standard highlight reel to share the raw reality of policy in the nation’s capital. Lessons learned\, mistakes she won’t make again\, and what has given her hope as she has met with legislators and crisscrossed the country engaging with library leaders.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:Attitudes\, Behaviors\, and Beliefs: The Psychology of Library Instruction
DESCRIPTION:The Librarian is in! Librarians don't typically provide psychiatric advice\, such as Lucy van Pelt from the Peanuts comic strip. However\, we do consider the psychological concept of dispositions in our instruction and interactions with patrons. Dispositions are “any of a number of enduring characteristics that describe or determine an individual’s behavior across a variety of situations and that are peculiar to and uniquely expressed by that individual”. The most obvious interaction of dispositions and librarianship can be found in The Framework for Information Literacy. The Framework is the ACRL model for information literacy instruction and contains lists of desirable dispositions to help librarians understand the feelings\, attitudes\, and behaviors at play during information processes. In this presentation\, we explore the role of dispositions in teaching and learning information literacy\, illustrated with examples from our recent study on the dispositions practicing nurses displayed while evaluating information. The presentation also examines ways in which librarians may be able to foster productive dispositions to information\, its creation\, value\, and use. The session will end with a brief facilitated discussion on dispositions towards information.

SUMMARY:Finding Your Feet: Harnessing the Power of Collaboration and Co-mentoring for Professional Development
DESCRIPTION:As a group of seven faculty librarians hired in the same year at a large academic library\, we formed a cohort to help support one another in our new roles and navigate the oft-confusing organizational forays and multi-layered processes of our positions. As catalogers and subject specialists from across the humanities and social sciences\, we have found that our group—which we have affectionately dubbed Septenarius—serves multiple functions. In this panel\, we will discuss some of those purposes\, which include but are not limited to\, 1) building a community of support and collaboration\; 2) supplementing institution-provided trainings and orientations with more local\, context-specific discussions\; 3) making interdisciplinary connections\; and 4) sharing information and resources (e.g.\, information on available funding for travel\, conference opportunities\, clarifications on policy and procedures\, technical tools and workflows\, hiring and supervising student employees\, etc.). We offer our experience as an informal case study of one model of a professional development group developed and run by and for peers. We posit that teams of this kind\, organized to provide a space for collaboration and support\, are a powerful vehicle for inclusion\, where all are strengthened by and have access to a community of professional peers\, thus providing social validation\, connection\, and confidence. While we in Septenarius all work in different areas of the library with unique responsibilities\, we have discovered a fondness and friendship in regularly convening—usually once a month—to discuss various projects\, hold each other accountable for upcoming deadlines\, and share casual moments of connection from our personal lives. As valuable as the support has been in our professional context of preparing for tenure and promotion\, we have often commented on how meaningful it is to have a time to connect socially\, to commiserate over shared struggles and celebrate individual successes. Recognizing that some of what we do in our group is specific to our own library and university situation\, we believe that the principles of nurturing a collegial and collaborative work environment have far-reaching impact and application in librarianship generally and thus will be relevant to conference attendees regardless of job title or status.

SUMMARY:Don't Self-Opt Out of Career Opportunities: Proceed with Confidence
DESCRIPTION:While reflecting on your career in the past\, have you ever stepped back from an opportunity that you wanted because you doubted yourself? In the workplace\, confidence often gets mistaken for competence\, and that means talented employees can be overlooked simply because they hesitate. The truth is that confidence isn’t something you’re born with. It’s a skill you can build. This session will get you started on building that skill. We’ll explore practical strategies to strengthen your confidence starting today. We’ll also break down the key differences between how confident individuals act compared to those who aren’t\, so you can recognize the patterns and start shifting your own approach. You’ll leave with actionable tools and the one powerful word that can transform your future\, so next year’s self-reflection can be even more positive. Don’t opt yourself out\; step in and own your potential. By the end of this session\, participants will be able to: 1. Recognize behavioral differences between confident individuals and those lacking confidence and identify which patterns they currently exhibit. 2. Understand the link between confidence and perceived competence and how this impacts career opportunities. 3. Leverage neural priming techniques to positively influence biochemistry and create a mindset conducive to confidence. 4. Enhance self-talk strategies to replace limiting beliefs with empowering language. 5. Develop a simple daily goal that reinforces confidence and forward momentum.

SUMMARY:From Assessment to Transcription: AI in Real Library Work
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is already changing how libraries do their work—from everyday assessment to large-scale digitization and access projects. In this joint session\, we’ll start with practical ways generative AI can strengthen library assessment. You’ll see examples of how AI tools can help generate assessment questions and ideas\, speed up analysis\, and produce clear\, professional narratives and reports—while also addressing what AI can and can’t do. Next\, we’ll shift to a real-world case study: the BYU Law Library’s effort to transcribe the 1925 U.S. Code. We’ll walk through why the project matters\, how the team approached accuracy at scale\, what changed along the way\, and how human transcription quality paired with AI-assisted cleanup made the goal achievable. We’ll conclude together with shared takeaways on the limits of AI\, the continuing importance of human judgment\, and practical guidance for adopting AI in library workflows with confidence and care.

SUMMARY:Finding Joy in Librarianship\, When You "Care Too Much"
DESCRIPTION:Have you found yourself questioning your value as a librarian? Have you mourned the loss of certainty and stability in the wake of social movements and political events or just change?\n \n The work of librarianship has always been a profession of change and adaptation- both in response to community needs and technology changes\, but disruption still can create confusion and stress\n \n Many people who are attracted to the work of libraries are those who value community service\, education and equitable access to resources. We care about our communities and our patrons. So when public and political support for libraries shifts\, it can feel like a threat to our personal identity and values. Librarians\, library administrators and library staff are often on the front lines of difficult conversations\, leading to high levels of emotional labor and maybe even feedback that you “care too much.” This session will reflect on the emotional and professional costs of adaptation within our profession\, while also providing a framework for actively finding meaning\, and joy in our work.

SUMMARY:Self-Care for Librarians
DESCRIPTION:Providing customer service in libraries unfortunately exposes library workers at times to tense and even hostile interactions. This session will focus on helping library workers to set appropriate boundaries with patrons and to care for themselves during and after those hard moments. By learning to recognize their own symptoms of fight\, flight and freeze\; to soothe their nervous systems in moments of dysregulation\; to embrace curiosity instead of shame about their physical and emotional responses to stress\; to talk about problems in ways that help instead of hurt\; and to re-establish feelings of safety\, library workers can come away from these experiences feeling empowered and better prepared for the next difficult interaction.

SUMMARY:The Great Metadata Migration: 20 Years of Digital Collections Information on the Move
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation you’ll learn about the tools\, strategies\, and decision-making currently being used in migrating 20 years of metadata and digitized special collections from BYU’s CONTENTdm system to a new\, highly customizable OrangeDAM platform. This migration involves transforming and standardizing our often inconsistently entered metadata from years’ past to align with a newly developed digital collections MAP based on Dublin Core fields and RDA guidelines\, with corresponding fields in MARC and ArchivesSpace included. This work is also being done in collaboration with our BYU sister schools\, BYU-Idaho and BYU-Hawaii\, which also host digitized materials in the BYU Library’s digital asset management systems. This presentation will cover the practical challenges of metadata cleanup\, transformation\, and migration\, and MAP creation\, offering insights into our process\, tools used\, and lessons learned so far to improve findability and usability across our digital collections.

SUMMARY:The Librarian Is In: Demystifying Systematic Reviews for Better Decision-Making
DESCRIPTION:Systematic reviews are syntheses of multiple studies on the same topic that meet pre-defined inclusion criteria\, thereby increasing confidence in the research findings. Unlike traditional narrative literature reviews\, systematic reviews follow an established methodology aimed at minimizing bias and increasing transparency and research reproducibility. When conducted by a team in accordance with established methodology\, systematic reviews provide evidence that clinicians\, patients\, and health consumers can use to make decisions. Although modern systematic review methodology originated in medicine\, headed by the Cochrane Collaboration (Our Story\, https://www.cochrane.org/about-us/our-story)\, they are now utilized in many disciplines including nursing\, social sciences\, education\, and environmental studies. This session will provide an overview of the history\, purpose\, and strength of systematic reviews and outline their basic methodology. We will provide tips on how librarians and health consumers can locate\, access\, and evaluate systematic reviews to use in their health (or health care) research and decision-making.

SUMMARY:A Dose of Institutional History: Archiving Health Sciences Campus Milestones
DESCRIPTION:This session explores the Eccles Health Sciences Library’s (EHSL) role in commemorating milestones across the University of Utah’s health sciences campus. As colleges\, schools\, and departments celebrate anniversaries and historical achievements\, they often turn to the library for curated materials\, particularly photographs\, from EHSL’s historical collections. Additionally\, these collaborations help the library grow its own archives through new donations of historical material from the respective collaborators. This session showcases how these partnerships can bolster both physical and digital collections. Attendees will discover how these efforts helped foster campus engagement\, preserve institutional memory\, and develop inclusive historical narratives. This session shares practical strategies for assisting campus partners\, fortifying institutional memory\, and further developing archival resources at the library.

SUMMARY:Nine Digital Curation Principles to Guide Decision-making
DESCRIPTION:From 2021 to 2023\, BYU Library commissioned an in-house\, interdivisional task force to holistically examine the extant personnel\, systems\, and workflows allocated to managing our wide range of digital content types. The aim was to identify the gaps and better coordinate the future access to and care of digital content. We created a set of guiding principles for the library administration and staff that oriented planning and discussion. These helped us trace commonalities between issues or solutions. We believe they are general enough to pass on to other institutions. They guide library staff in addressing the future digital curation questions that will surely arise with increasing frequency\, complexity\, and diversity. In brief\, they are: 1. The Expectation of Change 2. The Expectation of Rapid Growth 3. The Expectation of Digital Access 4. An Embrace of Experimentation 5. Cross-divisional Co-ownership and Collaboration 6. Resource Requirements 7. The Necessity (and Present Difficulty) of Achieving a Full Lifecycle 8. The Urgency of Resolution 9. Documentation. In this presentation\, we will elaborate on these principles and describe how they informed our task force’s deliberations\, how they are currently influencing our strategic directions\, and how they can be practically applied elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Chaos to Clarity: Automating Metadata Audits in AV Archives
DESCRIPTION:Auditing digitized AV files is essential for ensuring accuracy and preservation\, but our early approach was anything but efficient. We started with spreadsheets and formulas to compare filenames and descriptive metadata\, paired with separate tools for technical metadata checks—a process that was slow and prone to human error. To speed things up\, we introduced small scripts for individual tasks\, then refined each by identifying the essential steps for a comprehensive audit\, and eventually combined them into a single\, streamlined tool that verifies filenames against spreadsheets and audits technical metadata in one pass.\n \n When imaging AV media became part of our workflow\, new standards demanded additional checks for image files. Instead of introducing additional manual steps\, we expanded our script to handle these requirements too\, creating a unified solution for auditing across formats. Today\, this tool saves significant time and ensures consistency\, but we’re not stopping here. Future plans include adding progress indicators\, notifications\, and even rewriting the script in Python for greater flexibility and scalability.\n \n This session will share how we transformed a tedious\, manual process into an automated system that supports quality control at scale—and what’s next on the horizon.

SUMMARY:Jennifer Blair Keynote
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Blair Keynote: "Authentic Grace: Enlisting Gentle Boundaries and Compassionate Resistance by Shifting Motivations Toward Self-Compassion and Empathy"\n\nLibraries are caregivers\, providing compassion\, and empathy to their communities. We recognize the impact we make\, but only primarily as a library representative. As servant leaders\, we often fail to recognize that compassion also requires self-application. But by shifting motivations and applying compassionate resistance\, we incorporate gentle boundaries to maintain and eventually excel in implementing strategies to be intentionally authentic. In leading by example\, we employ the same level of compassion and empathy we give to others. We go beyond surface-level acknowledgement\, believing in our individual roles\, illustrating authenticity and intentionality in applying grace to ourselves.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:Leveling Up — Teaching Transferable Skills
DESCRIPTION:Employee development increases capacity\, communication\, and growth within any organization. Transferable skills are versatile competencies like communication\, leadership\, and time management that empower employees to succeed in current roles and future careers. Drawing on practical examples and interactive activities\, the session highlights how transferable skills can be effectively taught and applied\, especially in student or temporary positions. Since many student employees won’t pursue careers in libraries\, training them in transferable skills equips them for success in diverse fields and prepares them for job interviews. Additionally\, involving employees in skill-based training helps them recognize their strengths\, build confidence\, and develop leadership abilities. This approach enhances morale and fosters a culture of growth\, positioning student workers as valuable contributors to library teams and beyond.

SUMMARY:Being a Library Superhero Without Burning Out
DESCRIPTION:What do you see when you look in the mirror? Is there a superhero looking back at you? There should be! If you have any doubts\, this session will help you feel the power of your profession. The first part of the session will focus on the image of the librarian in a vast array of media and over millennia. While the duties of a librarian have expanded and even altered over time\, the core value of providing free and equitable access to information has remained constant. The dedication to this guiding principle sets the foundation for superhero status and needs to be celebrated! \n \n However\, burnout is a real issue among librarians and concerns for the profession have reached new levels. Tighter budgets and always being asked to do more with less can be deflating and exhausting. Not to mention the fact that it is getting more difficult than ever before to balance work and home life. \n \n There will be a panel discussion about learning to deal with the pressures of being a librarian in today’s world\, explore ways to develop a greater appreciation for the library profession\, and keep a renewed interest in the job without losing yourself along the way. \n \n This workshop will teach attendees how to be a superhero to both internal and external library patrons. We will take a closer look at how attendees can transform themselves into the librarian they want to be. And we will celebrate this unique creation\, the librarian.

SUMMARY:Genealogy and Local History for All: Strategies for Every Library
DESCRIPTION:Libraries play a vital role in preserving the stories of their communities. This session will explore practical ways to develop or enhance a local and family history section in your library—whether you're just getting started or looking to expand existing resources. Learn how to identify valuable local materials\, collaborate with community partners\, and create engaging displays and programming that connect patrons to their heritage. We'll also introduce the FamilySearch Affiliate Library program as one optional pathway to enrich your library’s genealogical offerings. SUMMARY:Overcoming Information Nihilism: Coaching Patrons from "Everything is Fake" to Hopeful Skepticism
DESCRIPTION:In an era of record-low trust in media and the proliferation of "AI slop\," many library patrons have moved beyond healthy skepticism into information nihilism—the belief that because some information is biased\, no information can be trusted. This shift presents a unique challenge for librarians: How do we teach critical thinking and evaluation skills without accidentally fueling deep-seated cynicism?\n\nJoin our panel of experts as we explore the "messiness of expertise" and share actionable coaching strategies to move patrons from the "everything is fake" mindset toward a productive hopeful skepticism. We will discuss:\nNavigating High-Tension Conversations: Strategies for engaging patrons who reject traditional sources of authority.Instructional Frameworks: Evaluating the effectiveness of frameworks like SIFT in the age of generative AI.Empowerment over Despair: Helping patrons embrace ambiguity and uncertainty without throwing all journalists and scientists "under the bus."Cross-Disciplinary Partnerships: Suggestions for leveraging expertise from experts and colleagues to combat both naive acceptance or nihilistic opposition.\nAttendees will leave with practical conversation strategies and resources to help their communities reclaim a sense of agency in a complex information landscape.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Outreach Connections
DESCRIPTION:This panel brings together librarians from academic and public libraries to provide a broad perspective on outreach efforts. We define outreach as connecting with library users outside the physical space of the library or outside the ways that library users typically interact with the library. As such\, outreach is a huge undertaking. In this panel we will focus on how building connections and working relationships with individuals\, organizations\, and groups both within and outside the library is central to successful outreach efforts. Attendees at the panel will gain practical tips for who to partner with and how to begin and strengthen those working relationships.

SUMMARY:Innovating for Impact: Social Innovation in Utah’s Libraries
DESCRIPTION:Social Innovation in Libraries explores how libraries harness their role as civic connectors to creatively and inclusively address community challenges. By collaborating with local organizations\, entrepreneurs\, and residents\, libraries serve as laboratories for testing new approaches to digital equity\, literacy\, workforce development\, and community wellbeing. Today’s libraries are redefining innovation—not through collections alone\, but through people-centered practices that foster connection\, experimentation\, and belonging. As welcoming “third places\,” libraries offer opportunities for socializing\, learning\, and creativity\, where librarians act as guides and facilitators of change. This session will highlight key types of social innovation in libraries\, including participation\, outreach\, partnership\, learning\, and creative making. Participants will explore foundational principles of social innovation\, strategies for communicating (“selling”) the concept within their organizations\, and share their own innovative practices. Together\, we will celebrate the library’s evolving role as a social innovator and consider implications for future library leadership.

SUMMARY:Unsung Heroes of the Catalog: Metadata Maintenance\, Enhancement\, and Remediation
DESCRIPTION:Quality metadata is vital to the patron experience\, but metadata creation is only one part of the metadata lifecyle. Patrons may not know what metadata maintenance\, enhancement\, and remediation are\, but they do notice when they need to be done. In this panel\, five librarians from BYU’s Cataloging and Metadata department will discuss the steps they have taken to upgrade the patron experience at their library through improved metadata. This panel will describe how to evaluate metadata\, create and prioritize projects\, involve student workers\, and collaborate with other library departments to improve the patron's experience finding and using library materials

SUMMARY:Parental Perceptions of Censorship in Utah
DESCRIPTION:Utah has also been one of the more active states in legislating for the removal of books from school libraries. Signed in 2024\, Utah’s HB 29 requires that a book be immediately removed from all school libraries if 3 districts deem the book as containing sensitive content which has led to the removal of 19 titles from school libraries. This dramatic rise in censorship begs researchers to ask questions about the feelings and motivations of those involved towards censorship. We need to answer these questions with the hope of finding answers that can bring disparate voices together so that the development of shared values can help us learn to work together. In this presentation we will present conclusions from a qualitative research study about Utah parents' thoughts and experiences with the removal of books from school libraries. This study is helping us to identify parental involvement in and awareness of what constitutes a need for censorship in libraries and homes as we critically engage with a variety of opinions on the validity of book removals to determine what influences\, personal or received\, create the environment in which we find ourselves.
